Heralding the Season

The decorative hunting horn, brilliant red poinsettia, and green holly touched with gold are all classic symbols of the holiday season. Placed together against the black Congress cloth, they form a spectacular composition of celebration and festivity that is too exquisite to save just for holiday displays. The flower and horn are given depth and dimension with careful placement of the various colors and values of silk and the innovative technique of metallic shading.

Learn Sandy's easy way to create spectacular shading as you use your needle and both silk and metallic braid to create the phenomenal flower and horn. An in-depth study in realistic shading, we'll also use basic and enhancement techniques. Judicious over-stitching with partial blending filament strands creates a special luminosity. Stitching time will be allotted in class for experimentation and to practice the methods with the help of the instructor.

In addition to Sandy's approach to silk and the newly developed metallic shading and how easy it is to do, we'll also learn how to paint a portion of the canvas with pigment markers, stitch directional shading, do contemporary couching of pearl purl, create a softly twisted ribbon, and give luminosity to the flower with a new technique. The instruction booklet contains "work-in-progress" photos that make it easy to complete the design. Basic color theory as it applies to depth perception and shading will also be discussed.
